David Beckham's move to the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer last summer was a big score for U.S. soccer and an even bigger one for Beckham, the former captain of England's national team.

The Galaxy's attendance for the five matches he played (he missed much of the season due to injury) averaged 37,659, 57% more than the team's previous record. Per game attendance for MLS as a whole rose 50% after Beck's debut, and ratings for ESPN2, one of MLS's national television partners, were up 25%.

Beckham posted huge wins off the pitch as well. Of the $49 million he made in 2007 to make him the highest-paid soccer player in the world, $12 million was salary from the Galaxy and Real Madrid, and $37 million was from image rights, including a portion of the proceeds from 300,000 Beckham Galaxy jerseys sold, and endorsements from the likes of Adidas (other-otc: ADDDY.PK - news - people ), Pepsi (nyse: PEP - news - people ) and Coty.

The superstar further fueled his hype by signing a three-year Armani underwear contract last November, worth upwards of $20 million. The deal launched with a series of ads showing Beck proactively posed in only the designer's drawers. Soccer moms have no excuse for not noticing him now.

Galaxy eye potential date against Iran

Los Angeles Galaxy officials have confirmed that the club is in
negotiations to play a friendly match with the Iranian national team
sometime in May.

Galaxy assistant general manager Tom Payne has been working on the
arrangements. While they have not been finalized, Payne acknowledged
that the two organizations have entered the "preliminary stages."

One important step was securing the assistance of the United States
Soccer Federation, which must approve and formally invite any visiting
team from another country. The Galaxy has the full cooperation of USSF
president Sunil Gulati.

"We have been working with the Galaxy and the U.S. State Department on
a possible match between the Galaxy and the national team of Iran,"
said Gulati. "While matters are not concluded, things are moving in the
right direction."

Beckham to appear on 'Sesame Street'

David Beckham has filmed a guest spot on US children's show Sesame Street.

The footballer was asked to appear on the long-running programme to teach puppet star Elmo and viewers a new word.

According to The Sun, he chose to explain the word 'persistence' for the cameo, which was shot last week.

A source said: "David has always been a huge fan of the show. He was more than happy to go on. He had a great time filming. A real laugh."

Stars including Robert De Niro, Jamie Foxx, REM and James Blunt are among previous guests on the series.

Beckham diplomacy may thaw US-Iran relations

CAN David Beckham defuse tensions between Iran and the US? Iranian football fans certainly hope so.

They are bursting with anticipation after Iranian officials said Beckham's LA Galaxy club has challenged the Iranian national team to a friendly match in the US next month.

The game would be a huge hit with the football-crazy population in Iran where Beckham is a sporting hero and fashion icon.

Selling tickets for the friendly would be no problem in Los Angeles which is home to so many Iranian expatriates that Iranians have nicknamed the city Tehrangeles.

Iran's football federation is now waiting for an official invitation from its American counterpart for the game to go ahead, officials in Tehran say.

"We will surely play LA Galaxy in the case of receiving an official invitation from the soccer federation of the US," said Hassan Ghaffari, the head of the foreign relations committee of Iran's football federation.

"Since the American club has asked for a friendly match with Iran's football team, then the USSF (US soccer federation) should send us a formal invitation.

"Otherwise, it would not be possible for us to travel to the US," Mr Ghaffari added.

Beckham enrolls son in Jewish preschool

Soccer star David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, a former Spice Girl, will send their son to a Jewish preschool.

Cruz Beckham, 3, will attend an "exclusive Jewish school" in the Los Angeles area that is "attached to a Jewish temple," the London tabloid magazine The Sun reported.

The Sun reported that Beckam's mother is Jewish, though she does not practice her faith.
